Picks of the Week: Jan 14, 2020

Here are some things I’ve got my eye on this week.

1. ASOS Design black leather/suede derbies with creeper sole

I'm usually not a fan of creeper soles—at all—but there's something about these that didn't make me immediately hate them. Maybe it's the relatively slim silhouette and the fact that the sole is much less aggressive than most creeper shoes I've seen. Or maybe it's because they look like some Valentino creepers for less than 10% of the cost. Either way, they're real leather/suede and they're only $27.50.

Anyone who knows me knows how I love a good black boot. Not to be Diet Prada between this list item and the last one, but these quite similarly resemble the SLP western buckle Wyatts. They also remind me of the Balenciaga Santiag boots, which I liked when I first saw, but not for the $1,490 price tag. It's difficult to tell in the on-feet pictures on the ASOS website, but it looks like these have a pretty slim shaft, which is always a big pro for me. I like the western detailing on the harness and on the toe, and if I end up purchasing these I might consider finding some third party toe and heel caps to add even more western flair. However, it's tough for me to justify buying another pair of harness boots, as I already own the Saint Laurent Wyatts, but maybe I'll get these when/if they go on sale.

I'm realizing that everything I've listed here is from ASOS, but at least these aren't shoes. These trousers are a pretty simple design concept, though I had never thought to do it before, so I guess that's why I'm not a designer for Twisted Tailor. I'm not sure how "basic"/essential these trousers could be, as black and silver are neutrals and the trousers aren't too flashy, but at the same time I think people would quickly notice that you're wearing the same trousers over and over. In my humble opinion, I think the price is a bit steep for what you get, but I think I could DIY something quite similar to these, as I do like the design a lot.

An aside, and another attempt at being Diet Prada: notice the Calvin Klein 205W39NYC dupes, which are now out of stock (but you can find a leather version here).
