Pick(up)s of the Week: Mar 2, 2020

Every year my school does a “Free Store” for professional dress clothing, where alumni donate their old professional clothes, and then you can go in and take whatever you want. Here’s what I got.

1. brown wool blazer with aggressive shoulder pads

In this pose it might be difficult to see, but there are HUGE shoulder pads in this jacket. It’s even more exaggerated if I button it, as the body of the blazer is cut very slim. However, even with the very aggressive shoulders, I think the jacket provides a very flattering shape, that inverted triangle everyone seems to be after.

2. tan angora/wool blend blazer

This jacket does not have aggressive shoulder pads, but it is cut a little more boxy, which I’m not sure I like. The angora blend makes the jacket ridiculously soft, though, and considering it was free, some tailoring definitely wouldn’t hurt too much.

3. red silk patterned scarf

This is one of those scarves that’s just a big square, so you can wear it in a multitude of ways. It’s long enough to wrap around twice, or tie into an ascot-like thing if I want. I think a good scarf can make any plain outfit look like you tried a bit harder.

4. another silk scarf, solid gold-ish in color

This scarf’s color is somewhere between gold and tan. Maybe I’d call it champagne. It will go with literally anything, though it probably won’t be very warm.

5. last and definitely least: a fake Prada bag

Note the off-center Prada logo. There’s also a tag inside the bag that says it was made in China, which I know is not impossible for Prada bags, but combined with the off-center logo and some poor quality leather stitching, it was definitely not a mark in the bag’s favor. I’m not sure if the suede is genuine or not, but it does feel nice. I’m almost certain the black trim and straps are not real leather, though.

I’m curious what rich alumni previously owned this fake bag and what made them decide to donate it to this clothing drive.
